Progoti, Light Bangladesh’s nutrition program, serves 21 children ages 0-5 living in brothels with their mothers. The primary goal of this program is to ensure balanced nutrition to allow these children to grow healthy and remain in touch with their mother. We also offer counseling for these children and their mothers.
LB used to offer primary health care checkups and doctors to these children, but unfortunately this program had to be cancelled due to a lack of doctors. We are still able to maintain health records for these children, and if you would like to help us provide this crucial service once more, please visit our donation page.
Our nutrition program is successfully protecting the health and immunity of these children. As soon as we are able, we hope to take in these children into our safe house when they are old enough to attend school.
Founded in June 2005 as Light Bangladesh’s pilot program,
Prottoy at Jalma is designed to provide destitute women in rural Bangladesh the means to gain financial independence by helping them start their own businesses.
Jalma provides traditional assistance in the form of cash loans; more often than not, these loans follow assessment and identification of suitable employment for each woman. LB first identifies a particular business for each program participant and loans her the necessary assets – ranging from sewing machines, a milk cow or goat - to start the business. The repayment schedule also varies with the particular type of business, the asset provided and individual need.
It’s encouraging to note that the same asset can be used again and again. For instance, a pregnant goat may be loaned. Once the goat has given birth and the recipient begins a successful business breeding and selling goats, the original goat is returned to
Jalma and may be given to another woman entrepreneur. This program is cost-effective, tailored to the individual needs of each participant and therefore, flexible. The
Prottoy staff monitors the progress of each participant, providing valuable support and advice. This employment program helps women without hope, otherwise condemned to a life of crushing poverty, to achieve economic freedom and financial independence. Women can care for themselves as well as provide their children with food, clothing, medicine and education. Please check the link to see outcomes of our first three years ofÂ
